That's not always conducive to a game like Hollow Knight. Playing for an hour and then putting it down for a couple of days makes it really hard to keep straight in one's head what's going on.I've played the game maybe 6-8 hours so far and have just gotten the dash capability (without using a guide so far). But now I've gone back through Greenpath and Forgotten Crossroads and don't see what to do next. It would take me at least an hour to go over all that area again looking for what's next, but if I only have an hour to play the next time I get some free time, it wouldn't be much fun to take my whole gaming session simply to figure out the next step. So I'm going to look it up.I will say that, for a gamer in my situation, making you find the mapmaker before you can fill in your map, and then only filling in new areas after you get to a save location, makes it a little frustrating.

Most of the exploration games I've played in the last decade create the map as you go (and don't require a 'compass' to see where you are). I look at mapping in a game like this as just a convenience so the player doesn't have to write it down on paper (which is what we used to do when I was a kid playing games like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Goonies II, and Faxandu on the NES). Hollow Knight builds the mapping into the game itself.
That's not a bad idea, it just doesn't suit my gaming style right now. So I could see myself looking up the mapmaker's location in each new area if he isn't readily found.
